Garden benches are one of the most fundamental forms of outdoor furniture – you can make one of your own with little more than two similarly sized and level objects and a sanded wooden board. Though the concept of a bench is rather simple, garden benches can be fashioned in ornate styles that represent baroque/rococo era or sleekly stylized to suit modern tastes. The appeal of garden benches, regardless of the style in which they are made, is their versatility in an outdoor space. Garden benches can be placed where other pieces of garden furniture rarely go – smack dab in the middle of a flower garden, up against the wall of house, directly beneath a tree, along side a sidewalk, etc.
Before purchasing an outdoor garden bench, it is best to take into consideration the material the bench is made from. Since there are so many woods to craft a bench, the most important aspect is the climate. For if the bench will be placed in a rainy or cold weather climate, than the bench needs to be made of a durable wood such as cedar. Stone benches are the most popular for they can stand up to any type of weather climate, are consider quite durable, and natural looking. Another consideration of an outdoor garden bench is the style. There are quite a few different types of styles to choose from. Benches can be manufactured curved, straight, decorative or plain. The type of style chosen will reflect the type of garden it will be placed in. Aside from material and style is also comfort. If the bench is decorative than comfort is not of consideration. If the bench will be used frequently than comfortable padding is something the gardener may want to consider.
